About Hillcrest Care Center & The Towers

Wray sits well out on Colorado's Eastern Plains, and it's here, as the seat of Yuma County, that Hillcrest Care Center and The Towers keeps 24 residents under one roof: assisted living on one side, skilled nursing on the other. Because both levels of care share the same address, a resident can shift from one to the other without packing up and moving across town as health changes. The Towers handles the day-to-day support of assisted living, reminders to take medication, help getting washed and dressed, a hand with mobility, and Hillcrest Care Center's skilled nursing side is set up for heavier medical needs: wound care, round-the-clock nursing, recovery after a hospital stay.

The community carries Medicaid certification, and it also opens its doors for short-term respite stays, giving a family caregiver room to rest or recover, which counts for something in a county where alternatives are few and far between. Locally, the building has built a name for staying clean and well-kept; families mention the absence of the odor problems that dog some older nursing facilities, and for a nursing team that stays engaged through hard stretches, including hospice-supported care.

Residents in The Towers who need substantial hands-on help get it promptly, and that same level of attention extends to the skilled nursing side. There's no memory care unit and no independent living apartments here, so this is a fit for a family sorting between straightforward assisted living and skilled nursing. Pets don't have a place in the building, worth noting early for anyone whose parent has an animal at home.

As Yuma County's seat, Wray sits near the North Fork of the Republican River, close enough to the Nebraska line that it's practically a border town. Keefe Memorial Hospital, the community's local hospital, is near enough for easy coordination on medical needs, and Main Street's handful of shops and cafes make for an easy walk when family comes to visit. No regional or national company runs Hillcrest Care Center and The Towers; it's a locally operated home, and that keeps assisted living and skilled nursing care rooted in Wray for the Eastern Plains families who rely on it.

Don't take your loved one here! The administration is terrible. On your first initial visit they are extremely friendly and welcoming but that's because they want the money. Once your loved one is there they won't even make eye contact with you. The general staff is wonderful…

First the Towers Assisted Living for a year+ and then the Special Care Unit for 3 months were incredibly loving and prompt with their care of our Father. He was a large man that needed much physical assistance at the end.
