Ottawa County looks like it has three skilled nursing addresses and functionally has two places. Freedom Village Holland Assisted Living and The Inn at Freedom Village share a street number on Columbia Avenue in Holland, which makes them two listings on one campus rather than two separate buildings. The third, The Oaks at Jamestown, sits over in Hudsonville on the Grand Rapids side of the county.
So the real geography is Holland or Hudsonville, and those two are pointed at different halves of the county. Sorting that out early saves a family from believing they have more genuine choice than they do, which is the kind of thing that only becomes clear after three phone calls.
Something This County Has That Most Do Not
All three of these addresses take respite bookings, and at the skilled tier that is worth pausing on. Skilled nursing is usually entered one way, through a hospital, on somebody else's timetable. A respite booking is the exception: a short planned stay with the full clinical package, arranged without an admission first.
That opens two things a family rarely gets at this level. A household caring for someone with real medical needs at home can hand that over for a fortnight and sleep, which is often the difference between carrying on and collapsing. And a family weighing a long-term move can see the building work before committing to it, watching how the nursing staff handle their person over days rather than judging from an hour in a corridor. Very few counties offer that at all, let alone at every address.
What Respite Costs, and What Comes After
The trade for not needing a hospital stay first is that Medicare does not apply. Its skilled benefit only opens after a qualifying inpatient admission of three nights, so a planned respite stay is private pay from the first day, and the daily figure reflects licensed nursing rather than the assisted living rates these campuses publish, which run $4,200 at The Oaks at Jamestown, $4,500 at Freedom Village Holland Assisted Living and $5,490 at The Inn at Freedom Village.
A stay entered the ordinary way runs differently. Medicare picks up a rehabilitation stay after that qualifying admission, fully at first and then partly, and stops at a hundred days regardless of how recovery is going. What follows is private pay, and eventually Medicaid for most long stays. One of the county's skilled settings participates in Medicaid, so establishing which before a bed is accepted is what keeps a later transition from becoming a second move.
A Young County With a Lot of People In It
Ottawa is the youngest county in this part of Michigan, with about 16.7 percent of its residents past 65 against a state figure near 19.6. That share is misleading on its own, because the county holds roughly 301,000 people, so the older population still comes to about 50,000.
Skilled nursing demand follows hospital discharges rather than population share in any case, and this county has three hospitals to discharge from. Beds turn on clinical cycles, availability shifts within a day, and a young county with a large absolute senior population produces steadier volume than the percentage suggests.
Three Hospitals, Which Is Unusual
Holland Hospital is an independent non-profit of about 190 beds in Holland itself. Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital covers the Zeeland and Hudsonville side, and Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital serves the county's northern lakeshore. Three hospitals across three towns is rare for a Michigan county and it matters at this level specifically.
Skilled nursing residents go back to hospital more than any other group in senior living, and each of those trips ends better when it is short and lands somewhere familiar. A resident in Holland is minutes from Holland Hospital; one at Hudsonville is in Corewell's orbit and close to the Grand Rapids hospitals beyond it. Neither is stranded, which is not something every county can say.
Using the Trial Before Using the Clock
When a discharge date is already set, the questions are narrow and urgent: which address has a bed at the right clinical level and by when, which is equipped for this particular resident, and which one takes Medicaid if the stay is likely to run long.
When there is no clock, this county offers a better route, and almost nobody uses it. A respite booking lets a family test the building that would otherwise be chosen under pressure, months before anybody has to decide anything, and it can be arranged at any of the three. Working out whether that fits your situation costs nothing at all, so reach out before the hospital sets the timetable rather than after.
