Once that stops being true, an assessed level sits on top of the rate, built out of ordinary detail: whether the tablets are handed over or simply pointed at, whether dressing takes a second pair of hands, whether the nights pass without anyone being called, and whether a resident can rise from a chair unaided.
Beneath the level, the room sets the base, with a private room priced above a shared one and a fixed charge added where two people move in together. In a house of this size those levels tend to be few and broad rather than numerous and fine, so the step between them is noticeable when it comes. Ask what each level costs and what specific change triggers a move between them, since in a twenty-bed building that judgement is made by the same staff who work the floor.
The Bills the Rate Does Not Settle
Room and utilities, meals through the day, laundry, housekeeping, the daily rhythm of the house and the care hours attached to a resident's assessed level all sit inside the monthly figure. A building this size runs that routine as a household rather than a programme, which suits a good many residents better than a busier setting would.
Households here carry a handful of recurring charges themselves. Two bills arrive for medicines, one from the pharmacy for the drugs and one from Union Court Assisted Living for the time spent giving them out, and a third follows for continence products in whatever quantity gets used. Smaller charges cover a hair appointment, a television or telephone line, furniture carried from the old house, and any hours bought in privately from an outside agency. Larger than all of them together is the entry fee at move-in, which appears in no published rate.
Being Ready When a Bed Opens
Twenty beds in a village do not produce many vacancies, and the ones that do arrive rarely give much notice. Whoever moves is whoever is ready: assessment done, level agreed, deposit terms understood. A respite stay puts all three in place as a by-product, which is its quiet second advantage.
Before either a trial or a permanent stay, the house needs a health appraisal signed by a doctor, an up-to-date list of medicines and a recent tuberculosis clearance. Ask whether money paid to hold a respite room carries over to a permanent one, how long that hold lasts and on what terms, and how far ahead an annual increase is announced. In a market this small, preparation buys more than negotiation does. A household that has priced the room, seen the house at an ordinary hour and gathered its documents is simply ready when a bed opens.
