How Assisted Living Works in Arizona
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) licenses assisted living facilities in two sizes: assisted living homes, which serve 10 or fewer residents, and assisted living centers, which serve 11 or more. Each facility is licensed for one or more of three service levels: supervisory care, personal care and directed care. Directed care is the highest level and is for residents who cannot direct their own care, which can include people living with dementia. Both homes and centers provide a room, meals, supervision around the clock and help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing and medications, depending on the service levels on the license.
Assisted living is not a nursing home. Residents who need continuous skilled nursing usually need a nursing care institution instead, although home health and hospice agencies can visit an assisted living resident. Families should ask which service levels a facility is licensed for, because a resident whose needs grow may have to move if the facility is not licensed for directed care.
Paying for Care
Local Senior Advisor does not have verified community-level pricing for assisted living in San Luis. As a statewide figure, the 2024 CareScout Cost of Care Survey put Arizona's median for assisted living at $6,370 a month and for a semi-private nursing home room at $7,604 a month. Actual rates depend on the room, the level of care and the facility. ALTCS, Arizona's Medicaid long-term care program, can help eligible residents pay for care in some settings; ask each community whether it is an ALTCS provider.
Getting Help
Local Senior Advisor is a free service to families. A local advisor can help a family compare assisted living options in San Luis, explain the difference between Arizona license types and service levels, and set up tours. Visiting at a mealtime and getting the monthly rate and what it includes in writing make the comparison easier.
When comparing assisted living in San Luis, it also helps to ask how long current caregivers have worked there, how the community communicates with families, what happens if a resident is hospitalized, and whether rates have changed in the past year. Talking with residents or their families during a visit often gives a clearer picture than a scheduled tour alone.
