The Haven Assisted Living

Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, a nonprofit that built its name delivering home health and hospice care across the region, took on a modest building in Hayden and turned it into The Haven Assisted Living. Hayden is a small Routt County town most people outside the area know only as the home of the regional airport, and inside The Haven the nonprofit has kept the population deliberately small: just twenty residents live there at any one time.

Staff help residents keep track of medications, get dressed, bathe, and move around the building safely, and because the community accepts Medicaid, it stays open to families who would otherwise be shut out of many mountain-town options that require private pay only. Respite care is also on offer, so a caregiver who needs a break, whether a few days or a few weeks, can step away knowing a loved one is looked after.

Ask people who know The Haven what stands out, and swimming trips and museum visits come up again and again, outings some residents hadn't taken in years before they moved in. The building itself runs quiet between those excursions: residents gather in common rooms when they want company or shut a door when they don't, and the food draws its own compliments rather than an afterthought. With only twenty residents, the same faces keep showing up to help, and families describe a familiarity that feels more like a close neighbor than a paid caregiver, with staff greeting relatives by name even on infrequent visits.

A nonprofit operator and Medicaid access put The Haven within reach for Hayden-area families managing on a fixed income. That said, the building's modest size rules out a locked memory care wing or the kind of sprawling campus and amenity list found at bigger communities, worth weighing for anyone whose loved one needs either. Hayden runs along the Yampa River and U.S. Highway 40, a few minutes from Yampa Valley Regional Airport.

Steamboat Springs, east of town, holds the region's larger hospital, UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, plus more restaurants and stores than Hayden's compact downtown offers. The Haven exists because a nonprofit home-health agency, not a for-profit operator, chose to open it, and that history still shapes the mission behind the twenty beds today, serving northwest Colorado families whether or not they can pay full private rates.
